State Issues:
Governor Orders Curtailment Of State Spending
Governor Baldacci recently issued an executive order directing state agencies to cut the current rate of spending by approximately $10 million. The order, called a curtailment, is intended to help ensure the state continues operating with a balanced budget, as mandated by the state constitution.
Most of the cuts – about $5.6 million – will be coming from the Department of Health and Human Services; but they are not expected to impact services. General Purpose Aid to Education and higher education funding will not be affected by the curtailment order.
Maine Chamber Of Commerce Launches Internship Website
The Maine Chamber of Commerce recently launched a free web service designed to help students find internships. The program, InternHelpME, is available at http://www.internhelpme.com. The site offers a variety of resources to students, educators and employers, including a powerful search engine designed to match employers and potential interns.
All internships listed on the site will be based in Maine, even if the company is headquartered out-of-state. There will be internships available throughout the state and to many different majors. Although the site will list both paid and unpaid positions, InternHelpME strongly encourages employers to pay all interns.
